The present article is a lecture delivered by Viacheslav Vsevolodovich Ivanov in April 1995 at the yearly session of California University in Los Angeles. In spite of the fait that in the text there are not given any references to literary sources and the work itself bears a touch of popularisation, Stratum Editor publishes it with great pleasure. The lecture’s style, the thesislike nature of a number of statements as if summarizes the researcher’s argumentation which is often difficult to understand for a stanger, simplify (we hope without any considerable distortion) the perception of his widely known concept of Indoeuropean language origin as well Indoeuropeans themselves.
