The substance in a clay pot found during excavations in Ladoga was considered using GC-MC as a product of coniferous resin heat-treating, possibly used for ancient ships’ sealing. Substances of almost the same composition were found on wooden paddles (mops) used as tools for tarring.
Examined samples originate from the different areas of the settlement are chronologically distant by at least one century. This suggests existence of a stable technique created empirically by Ladoga craftsmen who used it for a long period of time.
