The author studies male outerwear of the Russian townspeople in 14—15 cc. and elucidates elements of costume, borrowed from west and east. Costume occupied an important place in life of medieval people. Their world view was to a large extent reflected in clothes. The article also brings to light some customs and beliefs related to the Russian male costume. Such complex approach allows a better understanding of medieval mentality.
