The paper is devoted to bifacial backed knives (Keilmesser) from the Middle Palaeolithic site of Khotylevo I and Chaikovichi in the Upper Desna River basin, set within the urban boundaries of Bryansk. Morphological features of tools included in this group comply with the features of bifacial backed knives (Keilmesser). Presence of these knives in the Upper Desna River basin suggests a relation between some local Middle Palaeolithic sites with the area where such industrial type as Keilmessergruppe in Central and Eastern Europe was spread.
Keywords: Upper Desna region, Middle Palaeolithic, Khotylevo 1, bifacial backed knifes (Keilmesser), morphological characteristics
