The article tells about Yamburg bastion fortification and distinguishes two periods of construction: Swedish (1581—1590; 1612—1703) and Russian (as of 1703). The author identified these periods based on numerous written and illustrative sources, including archives. Yamburg fortress is situated in the middle flow of the Luga River, on the way from Novgorod to Narva (now Kingisepp town of Leningrad Oblast). It was an important military outpost on the western Russian border with Livonia. Archaeological study of bastion structure of Yamburg fortification of 17th — 18th centuries was not conducted, which is now a certain impediment in further research of the fortification activities in Yamgorod — Yamburg and makes us use only written and cartographic materials for reconstruction of this defense object.

Keywords: Yamburg, Yamgorod, Novgorod Land, fortification in 17th—18th centuries, bastion fortress
