The author used numerous sources to make a genuine reconstruction of the number and settlement pattern of Old Believers in Budjak in 1800-1850. He evaluated the heuristic potential of different types of sources (military, fiscal and other descriptions; reports and census). Their correlation yielded some adequate and verifiable results. The author analyzed challenges and opportunities of a quantitative study of development of this expressive ethno-confessional group. These data are set in the wide historical context of the region and of the community.
