E. A. Ryabinin noted that in any discussion of Staraya Ladoga’s archaeological materials it is necessary to consider not only the items showing the broad international relations of the settlement, but also the data of its inhabitants' daily life. The study of Ladoga’s ceramics of 8th—10th centuries AD does not confirm S. L. Kuzmin’s conclusions concerning the repeated “sudden replacements” of the population. The actual findings seem to reflect the establishment of an Early Medieval culture and gradual changes among the population of the developing Upper Rus'.
