The article is devoted to analysis of works of ancient portable sacred sculpture made of stone as a source for studies in the culture of Ancient Rus and Muscovy. The author focuses on the origin of and spread of such sculptures, their stylistic and semantic features, and chronology. He questions the real possibility of localization of production centers and unambiguous dating of most of these items, based on the information available to researchers. What seems to be credible is just the information about the special veneration of family and parish shrines in the overall context of the cultures of Ancient Rus and the Tsardom of Muscovy.

Keywords: Ancient Rus, Tsardom of Muscovy, sacred art, stone icons, chronology, origin, interpretations
