In the last quarter of the12th — the first half of 13th centuries, burials in “sitting” position appear in the kurgans on the Izhora plateau. This rite is unknown in the areas populated by the Finno-Ugric tribes. There is reason to associate it with the Slavic population. The most likely area, from which carriers of this tradition could have migrated, is eastern Novgorod region, or/and the western part of the Tver region. The author studies chronology and jewelry of this group of burials, as well as main historiographical hypotheses.
