The east border of Kolochin and Pen’kovka cultures in 5—7 centuries lays on the line of the Desna — upper reaches of the Seym — Oskol. Chertovitskoye-Zamyatino type settlements (end of 4th — 5th centuries) are found in the eastern part of the Upper Don region. In the upper reaches of the Voronezh River and on the Tsna River a series of sites with finds of hand-made Kolochin ceramics and items of 6—7 centuries are known. These data allow to raise the question about the date and character of the Dnieper Slavs’ penetration to the Upper Don region in 5—7 centuries.

Keywords: Early Middle Ages, Upper Don, Kolochin
