The article reveals the little-known facts about the relations of the famous European scholars — the leader of the Soviet archaeology in 1920s V. A. Gorodtsov and the Austrian archaeologist Gero von Merhart. The conflict between them occurred in 1924 and led to a break of their contacts. The authors analyze the causes of the conflict, consider the behavior of its participants, and estimate its implications for the history of archaeology.
