The authors of this article support the hypothesis of O. M. Prykhodniuk on the genetic and semantic connection between the ethnic name “Antes” from the Chronicles by Iordannes and Byzantine historians of 6th—7th centuries AD and the term “perevoznik” (ferryman) of the Old Russ’ian chronicles. The term “Antes” could be spread among the Byzantine historians by Iordannes who could use some unknown Greek texts, where the settled population of the North Black Sea region could be marked as ναυ̃ται — “oarsmen”, and therefore it could be transformed into Αντοι.
