This overview summarizes key written accounts and archaeological data about an area in the south-eastern part of the Carpathian-Dniester lands, efficiently explored by the Mongol conquerors in the 13th—14th centuries. Comparative-historical and chronological analyses are employed to study Jochid forts in Belgorod-Dniestrovski, Costeşti and Old Orhei, as well as closely related to them regions of nomadic and settled life. These data, accumulated through extensive studies after the World War II, open new opportunities for a precise definition of many cultural and historical elements of the Golden Horde.

Keywords: Golden Horde, Jochids, Belgorod-Dnestrovsky, Costeşti, Old Orhei, fortress, mosque, Jochid coins, nomads, hammam, Arabic inscriptions
