The multilayered settlements located at the confluence of the Vologda River and its small tributary Veksa River (Sukhona Basin) are a key point to reconstruction of pre-historical and historical cultural developments in the South-East European forested area. The exclusive importance of these settlements is explained by their well-stratified sequence of archaeological layers, up to 3 m thick. The Veksa complex is even more important owing to its excellent preservation of the organic materials, especially in the lower horizons, so the site enables a reference chronology to be developed for prehistoric cultures and the history of environment in north-eastern Europe that covers a time span of more than eight millennia.
The trenches of 2015—2016 found numerous wooden structures in the sediments of the river bank. Remains of six fishing traps of various sizes (four of which are dated by 14C, by the first half and the middle of the third mill. BC) testify to the existence of intensive fishing in this area in antiquity.

Keywords: Chalcolithic, wooden fish structures, pine splinters, fishing, Veksa 3, Upper Sukhona
