The Burial Ground and Maksimovka I Settlement in the Forest-steppe Volga Region (Results of the Research 2020)

Maksimovka I burial ground is located in the edge of the Maksimovka village in the place where the Syezzhaya River flows to the Samara River, the left inflow of the Volga River. In this burial ground, 25 graves were studied in 2020. Nine graves were dated to the Eneolithic. In these graves, skeleton’s head was oriented to the north, northeast, east and southeast. The graves were covered with ocher and grave goods. The skeleton in grave 35 lay stretched out on its stomach and was accompanied by marmot incisors, stone and bone items, and a horn pommel in the form of an animal’s head. Seven burials had skeletons in sitting or semi-sitting position. In two of these burials, skulls were burned. Three burials contained inventory of knife-like plates, an arrowhead, marmot incisors, stone pendants, bones and shells. One burial is secondary. Five graves of the Srubnaya culture included vessels, a pendant and a bronze thread. There was an altar with bones of a goat and a sheep. Six graves were dated to the Middle Ages, with skeletons stretched out on their backs. In three graves, skeletons were oriented to the northwest and to the west and contained such inventory as a metal mirror, beads, fragments of iron things, a wooden statuette. Other three skeletons were oriented to the west and southwest. Cultural and chronological status of the five destroyed burials has not been established.
