The paper presents the results of archival and archaeological research on the Church of St. Clement in Staraya Ladoga. The church has a precise foundation date —1153— recorded in the chronicle and is regarded as an important stage in the development of the Novgorod tradition of church architecture. The article provides a detailed historiography of 150 years of research on the monument and introduces several archival sources into scholarly circulation for the first time. It also offers detailed descriptions and reconstructions of the building techniques used in its construction. Analysis of the archival sources made it possible to locate the lost internal staircase leading to the church gallery, an issue that had long remained a subject of debate.

Keywords: the church of St. Clement, architecture of Old Rus’, Staraya Ladoga
