Palaeolithic of Cis-Baikal includes regional chronostratigraphic unit, called “Makarovo stratum”. It includes redeposited artifact assemblages with modified surface resulted from aeolian impact. It has been supposed earlier that paleogeographical conditions provoking aeolian corrasion of the artifact surfaces took place during the Murukta stadial (MIS-4). Correspondingly, the Makarovo stratum artifacts were dated to MIS-5 or even earlier. Here we present the results of attributive analysis of the artifact assemblage originating from the eponymous Makarovo-4 site. Knapping technology presents unidirectional parallel flaking of locally abundant pebbles, with small and medium blades being the targeted blanks. The tool assemblage includes typical Initial Upper Palaeolithic types. The “Makarovo stratum” consists of asynchronous and heterogeneous industries. As for the industry of Makarovo-4, it seems to reflect the adaptation of the bearers of a laminar Initial Upper Palaeolithic tradition to the local pebble raw material and should rather be dated to MIS-3.

Keywords: Cis-Baikal, Makarovo-4 site, early stages of the Upper Palaeolithic, aeolian corrasion, knapping technology, tool assemblage
