The first Stone Age finds from the western coast of this largest in Kaliningrad region lake (SE part of the oblast-region, close to the border with Lithuania) were discovered in 1930s. During 1960—70s a large amount of stone objects was collected by the biologist N.K.Alekseev. The author pursued research there in 1974 and 1981. The site with the cultural layer was found at the western extremity of a large sand eminence. It was partly excavated in 1981 (84 sq. m.).The concentration of finds was disclosed in the central part of excavation. The materials from the area can be divided into two main groups depending on the degree of patinization. The first group consisting of flints without patinization or with very weak patinization (fig. 1, 2) includes the main material of 1981 excavations, the concentration of flints with some finds of pottery of the Early Neolithic type with organic temper (connected with the lowest portion of the culture layer), and a part of N. K. Alekseev’s collection. The second group consisting of flints with strong patinization includes the other part of N.K.Alekseev’s collection and surface finds collected by the author, mainly in 1974 (fig.3). The finds of the first group can be dated by the Early Neolithic, and the ones from the second group by the second half of the Mesolithic, with some typological parallels to the materials from Lithuanian sites (Rimantiene, 1971). Some flint artefacts known from the coast of the lake (without precise localisation, from Kaliningrad Museum collection) can be attributed to the Early Mesolithic (fig, 3: 37-42). Some small sherds from 1981 excavations, not connected with the main concentration, which are characterized by sand temper and corded ornamentation belong to the Late Neolithic-Early Bronze Age.
