The author analyses the book by Penner S. 1998. Schliemanns Schachtgräberrund und der europäische Nordosten.-Bonn dedicated to one of the most actual studies of the Late Middle – Early Late Bronze Age in Eastern Europe: the origin of the war chariot and its typical harness. The review contains a minute analysis of the typology offered by S. Penner of some types of cheekpieces of the time. Consequently, the author agrees with the main conclusion of the researcher that this cultural phenomenon takes its origin in Eastern Europe, extending thereafter to the Carpathian and Balkan region and Greece. The author believes, however, that so general conclusions would hardly meet the demands to this paper. She thinks that the obtained types, first of all discoid bone cheekpieces, cannot serve as a basis for study of cultural and historical development of the phenomenon, the so called “chariot aristocracy”. This material can neither be used for relative dating of the sites. Nevertheless, the author emphasises the importance of this paper for a further study of the problem and believes that some conclusions of S. Penner concerning grooved or lamellar cheekpieces, and especially the metal items, deserve a close attention of the researchers.
