The paper analyzes the old and new craniological materials of the Mesolithic — Eneolithic epochs from the territory of the Volga-Ural forest-steppe. The method of principal components is used. The obtained results are interpreted in the context of the existing provisions on the origin and development of anthropological complexes of the northern part of Eurasia, the chronological sequence of archaeological cultures, new paleogenetic data. Possible emergence of an independent center of racial genesis in this geographical area in antiquity is demonstrated. Physical features of the population of this area, due to its borderline location between different natural zones, were subjected to certain modifications, but they were preserved for a long time. The term “Uraloid”, previously used by some researchers, can be used for this anthropological complex, bearing in mind the initial geographical proximity of its carriers to the territories of the Urals and partly Trans-Urals.

Keywords: craniological polymorphism, Mesolithic-Eneolithic, Volga-Ural, archaeology, genetics, anthropological terms
