The author studies the issue of the so called “Thraco-Cimmerian” circle of antiquities based on the evidence of just one archaelogical site, i. e. Cartal hillfort. The site comprises two components — a settlement and a cemetery. Analysis has shown an obvious cultural symbiosis, with two underlying traditions. One of them was shaped by Balkan cultures, mainly of the Thracian circle. The other one belongs to a pre-Scythian steppe population, which the author believes to be Cimmerians. He brings evidence to support historicity of this people and to localize it on the North Black Sea coast before their raids into the Western Asia.
