The article is dedicated to history of the Russian archaeology viewing it in perspective of St.-Petersburg’s importance for history and development of the Russian archaeology. Special attention is paid to peculiarities of the Russian archaeology and its distinctive features compared to archaeology of other countries. It also regards differences between the two capitals of Russia – Moscow and St.-Petersburg – in what concerns development of the Russian and Soviet archaeology, emphasizing St.-Petersburg’s contribution to archaeology in the past and present.
