The problem of the transition from the Mesolithic to the Neolithic is one of the most pressing for most Eurasia regions. This study focuses on describing characteristics of the Mesolithic flint artefacts of the forest-steppe Volga region and is based on the realization and utilization of plate blanks. Early Neolithic flint complexes are distinctly flake, artefacts on plates are few and do not form series. Early Neolithic ware closely resembles artefacts of the Central Asian interfluve, from where they were brought to the forest-steppe Volga region as a result of migration. The chronological framework of the Mesolithic and Neolithic is determined through radiocarbon dating. The period of probable coexistence of foreign and aboriginal forest-steppe Volga region groups during the first half of the 7th mill. BC is being determined. It is certain that during this stage contacts, if any, were not systematic and did not leave a significant impact on the Early Neolithic groups.

Keywords: Eastern Europe, forest-steppe Volga region, Mesolithic, Early Neolithic, migration, flint industry, chronology
