The data accumulated during the last decade make it possible to reconsider the role played by different kinds of stone raw material in the Palaeolithic of the Trans-Baikal region. The paper summarizes the available evidence on the subject and provides an overview of the raw material acquisition and use strategies. Special attention is paid to the continuity in the use of some kinds of rocks between different stages of the Stone Age, which in the authors’ view might have been caused by the technological necessity, i. e. the selection of rocks that were the best fits for the existing flaking technologies.

Keywords: Trans-Baikal region, Upper and Final Palaeolithic, petroarchaeology, raw material, flaking technology, mineral resources base.
