Although one can find many pages on “Neolithisation” in post-Soviet literature on development of the Еarly — Мiddle Holocene cultures in southern part of Eastern Europe, in our opinion, there is no conclusive evidence for the Neolithic transformation of the population in this region. The article presents arguments in favor of predominantly “sub-Neolithic” nature of the development of the Northern Pontic-Caspian region in the beginning — first half of the middle Holocene and, therefore, the need to abandon the so common term “Neolithisation”, as incorrectly used in this case.

Keywords: Northern Pontic region, Northern Caspian region, Neolithic, Neolithisation, Sub-Neolithic
