The article summarizes the data from written and archaeological sources of the Roman period, covering such aspects of glassmaking as the origin of raw materials and the organization of glass production, technological and socio-cultural aspects of glass recycling, interregional and international trade of the Roman Empire, etc. It represents an overview of publications by archaeologists, natural scientists, and glass historians interpreting the written evidence, archaeological, and archaeometric data on Roman glassmaking. Special attention is paid in the light of these issues to Eastern European archaeological materials.
