To reveal the causes of ethnic conflicts the author proposes to compare regions withdifferent degrees of conflictivity using different parameters. The Balkan regions are divided into 3 groups: conflicts, latent conflicts and "knots". The key problem is selection of parameters. As the author suggests, one of the main requirements is that the parameters must be formalizable, which will make it possible to pass from subjective evaluations to convincing reasoning. The article presents approximately 30 parameters. The proposed method is meant to to reveal which of these parameters influence interethnic conflictivity and which do not.
