The article is dedicated to prototypes of magic items in J.R.Tolkien's works. Basing on the comparison ofTolkien's works and Celtic, German and Iranian mythologies there were discovered some prototypes for magic rings of power, elves'magic items and magician's attributes.
The research has found out that there are two kinds of conceptions about power underlined at the heart of the majority of images under consideration: about power asotherwill'sviolenceand sub-creation (when one takes his part in world creation). It is possible to find both these archetypes in mythologies. In Tolkien's world these terms are corresponded to "Magic" and "Wizardry".
