The author attempts to prove the idea that Slavic medieval dwellings were highly semiotic, the idea that does not find a unanimous support among the scholars.
While some information can be found in written sources, for example in Procopius and Pseudo-Maurice's works, accounts of early Slavic dwellings are scarce and abrupt. Although more information can be found in archaeological research, the archaeologists seem to be more focused on some specific construction details of early-medieval Slavic dwellings and usually avoid any semiotic interpretation.
So this paper is the first attempt of a semiotic study of a medieval Slavic dwelling, trying to prove that existence of an entry and a hearth is not a coincidence and can answer a lot of questions about comprehension of a living space, interior design and relation between the "inner" and "outer" world, the meaning attributed to dwelling and many other questions.
