The article is dedicated to analysis of Roman evidence yielded by the excavation of the multi-layer fort of Kartal in the Lower Danube basin. There was a small fortress with an adjacent settlement in the Roman time. The main period of existence of the settlement is dated by 2nd – first half of 3rd cc. It is likely that Sarmatians made their burial ground here after the fortress had been abandoned. Later on, in 4th c. there was a settlement of Chernyakhov culture.
