The author draws a conclusion that while doing their service in Byzantium, the Varangians might as well use Scandinavian weapons (swords). According to majority of sources, however, they actively used Byzantine weapons (pole-axes, lances, shields, etc.) and preferred wearing Byzantine clothes.
