The article summarizes all available data on ancient and medieval coin finds in the North-East of Russia. Questions of the origin and distribution of coins in this region are discussed. Ancient coins are widely used in South-East Asia in the period of the Iron Age. Small amounts of eastern coins are found in the peripheral areas to the north from these countries, where they completely lose their transactional function and are used as decorations or as ritual objects. The northern aboriginals could receive these coins and other metalware in exchange for the furs, which were highly demanded in southern regions.
