Historiographers traditionally date the beginning of the diplomatic relations between the Khanate of Bukhara and Muscovy to 1557—1558. However, the “Inventory of the Tsar’s archive” (“Opis Carskogo arhiva”) mentions a “Bukharan notebook”, which was dated 1548/49—1550/51. The article examines the epistle from Abdulaziz Khan to the Tsar Ivan IV. The authors highlight the question of its connection with the documents which are mentioned in “Inventory”. Identification of the person of Abdulaziz allows to date the beginning of the Russian-Bukharan relations by much earlier time (the end of 1548). The document is considered in the context of international relations of the middle of the sixteenth century and the titular disputes of Moscow.
