The article is devoted to the scar pattern analysis as one of components of the “сhaîne opératoire” study procedure. This method is based on a detailed analysis of dorsal scars in their entirety, aimed at the reconstruction of the process of tool formation. The article presents a complete description of the main stages of such analysis and of the principles, on which dorsal scar classification is based. The descriptions are accompanied with graphical drawings illustrating the main stages and results of the analysis. In addition, the work contains a brief overview of previous attempts to apply the method to the study of various types of stone artifacts. Special attention is paid to the results obtained by the authors in the course of their study of truncated-faceted tools from the Obi-Rakhmat grotto (Central Asia).
