The article is dedicated to the antiquities of the upper and partially middle reaches of the Sula river. It assesses the contribution of the Leningrad researchers of 1940 s —1970 s to the study of the forest-steppe Dnieper Left Bank of the 1 st millennium AD, including archaeological mapping of the Dnieper’s Left Bank cultures (P. N. Tretyakova, I. I. Lyapushkina, G. F. Korzukhina). The author considers the views of E. A. Goryunov, M. M. Kazansky, O. A. Shcheglova on certain unresolved issues of the first half of the 1 st millennium and the 7 th —8 th centuries, presents the data on late Zarubintsy, late Scythian, Kyiv, Chernyakhov, Penkovka (Kolochin) and Volyntsevo sites from the Upper Sula reaches examined by E. A. Goryunov and G. A. Romanova and publishes the plans of the sites drawn by G. A. Romanova.
