The Turkish fortress was built in Bender in three stages: 1) a small castle (citadel) was built in 1538; 2) in 1584, it was surrounded by a ditch and a system of curtains and towers; 3) in 1619, construction of the outer front bastion was finished. The author presents the results of historical and architectural analysis of the fortress complex of Bender, publishes its layout, measurements of the fortress and some of its towers, as well as an account of all epigraphic inscriptions so far discovered on its walls.
